Laser Skin Resurfacing

Laser skin resurfacing is a non-invasive surgical procedure that softens lines and wrinkles, removes surface imperfections, and tightens and rejuvenates the skin. It is safer, longer lasting, more effective and predictable than dermabrasion or chemical peels.
Results are seen immediately and continue to improve during the healing process.

How does Laser Skin Resurfacing work?

Laser skin resurfacing involves the use of the fractionated laser. The laser will create microscopic holes in the skin.  This enables the skin surface to heal quickly, usually within several days.  During this time and during the next several weeks, the collagen fibers under the surface of the skin are being regenerated.  The collagen in the skin gives skin its integrity and structure.  Essentially, the old dry and damaged skin cells and collagen are replaced with new cells and collagen fibers.  This results in skin that appears more supple, youthful and healthy.

Following the treatment, no bandages are applied.  A thick layer of Aquaphor ointment (a very bland moisturizer like Vaseline) is applied to the skin and is left untouched for 24 hours.  After this, patients use vinegar and water soaks several times per day for the next 7 days.  The vinegar serves as a natural antibiotic and antifungal aimed at preventing infections.  At that time, the skin has healed enough to enable patients to apply a sunblock and moisturizer along with makeup.  The skin may appear slightly pink for several weeks and this is normal.

Patients are usually seen three days after the procedure, 10 days after, 1 month and at 3 months.  Of course, if there are any concerns, questions or issues that a patient has, they are seen whenever they want without delay.

Will I need to take time off work?

Most people will need at least one week off from work to heal from laser skin resurfacing. Each day the skin will begin to look better and better. After approximately 7 days, makeup can be used to cover the pinkness of the skin. This pinkness typically lasts for several weeks and is a visible sign that the newer, tighter and smoother collagen is replacing the old damaged collagen.
