Droopy Eyelid Solutions

Drooping of the eyelids is usually due to a loosening of a tendon that normally holds the eyelid in position. This can be repaired by reattaching the tendon to a more appropriate position. Our specialist, Dr. Neufeld, performs this procedure through one of two ways: inside the eyelid or outside the eyelid.

Inside the Eyelid

If the procedure is done from the inside of the eyelid, it is because the drooping is mild. With this approach, there is no incision made on the skin. The eye may feel scratchy for the first two to three days. Antibiotic ointment is applied to the incision if done on the external surface and antibiotic drops are applied directly to the eye if the procedure is done from the inside of the eyelid.

Outside the Eyelid

If the drooping is more pronounced the procedure might be performed from the outside of the lid. In this approach, an incision is made in the eyelid crease, and the tendon is corrected with absorbable stitches. Dr. Neufeld uses the laser for this procedure and it can be done under local anesthesia with minimal bruising, swelling, and discomfort.

The procedure is done under local anesthesia and takes approximately 30 minutes for the external approach and 15 minutes for the internal approach. Pain is minimal for both procedures. Swelling is usually mild for the external approach and virtually nonexistent for the internal approach.

These procedures enable patients to see more of their visual field while giving patients a more rested and youthful appearance at the same time. These procedures are most often covered by insurance.
